Grimes is going to star in an AI movie that’s coming to theaters

Gods Don't Give Gifts, billed as the first AI-generated film to receive a theatrical release, is arriving in cinemas on December 4th - and it now has a recognizable face attached. Pop star Grimes will appear in the sci-fi feature, lending both her physical likeness and her actual vocal performance to the production. The combination of a real spoken performance with an AI-rendered visual presence is a notable distinction, setting the project apart from fully synthetic efforts.

The film is produced by AI studio Fable, which has been one of the more active companies pushing AI-generated storytelling toward mainstream distribution. In a press release, Fable suggested that the approach used for Grimes - pairing a real actor's voice with their AI-rendered likeness - is a format likely to grow more common in the industry. That framing positions Gods Don't Give Gifts less as a novelty and more as an early example of a production model Fable expects others to follow.

The involvement of a well-known artist like Grimes matters for reasons beyond promotion. AI-generated films have so far struggled to attract serious attention from established performers, in part due to unresolved questions around consent, compensation, and creative credit. Having a public figure actively participate - rather than having their likeness used without permission - gives the project a degree of credibility that purely synthetic productions lack, and may encourage broader conversation about what ethical AI casting could look like.

Whether the film finds an audience in theaters will be closely watched by others in the AI film space. A successful theatrical run, even a limited one, would demonstrate that general audiences are willing to engage with AI-generated narrative features on the same terms as conventional cinema. The December 4th release gives the project a relatively short runway to generate that proof of concept before the year closes out.
