AI-generated videos are already displacing actors and livestreamers across China's entertainment industry

China's short-drama market has become one of the clearest real-world indicators of how quickly generative video can restructure an entire entertainment sector. According to a Financial Times report, 95 percent of the 128,000 short dramas released in the first quarter of 2026 were AI-generated - a figure that points to near-total displacement in a format that was, just a few years ago, staffed by human casts and production crews.

The human cost is becoming increasingly visible. Some actors describe being required to provide recordings of their voice and detailed likeness data to AI systems as a condition of continued work, only to be let go once that data has been captured. Livestreamers - a large and previously fast-growing employment category in China's digital economy - are facing similar pressure, with AI-generated hosts able to operate continuously at a fraction of the cost of a human performer.

The pattern reflects broader dynamics in generative video technology, where the barrier to producing convincing synthetic characters has dropped considerably over the past two years. Tools that can clone a voice from a short sample, animate a photorealistic face, and sync both to a script are now commercially accessible, and the economics strongly favor their use in high-volume, cost-sensitive formats like short dramas and e-commerce livestreams.

Labor disputes linked to AI use in Chinese entertainment are rising, though the legal frameworks for handling them remain underdeveloped. Questions around consent for likeness and voice data, residual compensation, and what constitutes fair use of a performer's identity are largely unresolved. China's experience is drawing attention from labor advocates and policymakers in other countries, as it represents one of the first large-scale, documented cases of generative AI directly displacing a defined entertainment workforce - rather than simply changing how that workforce operates.
