AMD Acquires World Labs for $8.2 Billion, Bringing Fei-Fei Li Onboard

AMD has struck a deal to acquire World Labs, the startup founded by computer vision pioneer Fei-Fei Li, for $8.2 billion. Li will join the chipmaker as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, a hire that signals AMD's intent to compete not just on hardware but on foundational AI research.
World Labs is best known for its spatial intelligence work, including Atlas - a model capable of generating and simulating 3D environments from minimal input. That capability sits at the intersection of generative image and video AI, physical simulation, and robotics, making it a strategically broad acquisition rather than a narrow technology buy.
For AMD, the move sharpens its rivalry with Nvidia, which has built significant momentum in AI through both its GPU dominance and growing software and research investments. By bringing Li and a dedicated world-model research team in-house, AMD gains credibility and capability in a research area that most chip companies have had to source externally.
Li is best known for co-creating ImageNet, the large-scale visual dataset that helped trigger the deep learning era. Her involvement lends the acquisition considerable scientific weight. World Labs had been one of the more closely watched generative AI startups since its founding, and the exit at this valuation reflects how seriously the industry is treating spatial and world-model research as a long-term bet.
