AMD will acquire Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs for $8.2 billion
AMD has announced it will acquire World Labs, the startup founded by Fei-Fei Li, for $8.2 billion. Li, widely recognized for her foundational contributions to computer vision and her role in building the ImageNet dataset, launched World Labs with a focus on spatial intelligence - the ability for AI systems to understand and reason about three-dimensional environments. The deal represents one of the largest AI startup acquisitions in recent memory.
Under the terms of the agreement, Li will take on the role of executive vice president and chief scientist at AMD. That appointment places her at a senior leadership level within the company, suggesting AMD intends her influence to extend across research strategy rather than being confined to a single product line or division. It is a notable shift for Li, who has spent much of her career in academia and research institutions, including a long tenure at Stanford University.
World Labs had been working on technology that allows AI models to build rich, persistent representations of physical spaces - a capability with potential applications in robotics, augmented and virtual reality, and autonomous systems. For AMD, which competes with Nvidia and Intel in the market for AI accelerator chips, bringing that research in-house could inform how future hardware is designed and optimized for spatially-aware workloads.
The acquisition comes at a time when chip companies are increasingly looking to vertical integration - combining hardware expertise with proprietary AI research - as a way to differentiate themselves. AMD has been expanding its software and ecosystem efforts around its Instinct GPU line, and adding a high-profile research leader like Li, along with the underlying technology from World Labs, could strengthen its position as both a hardware supplier and an AI platform company.
