Apple could help you prove your iPhone photos aren’t deepfakes

Apple is quietly developing a camera-level authentication feature for iPhones, according to code discovered in iOS 27 beta 5 by 9to5Mac. Referred to internally as "Apple Reference Image," the system is designed to embed provenance metadata into photographs at the precise moment they are captured - creating a verifiable record of a photo's origin tied to the device that took it.
The practical purpose of such a feature is straightforward: as AI-generated imagery becomes more convincing and widespread, distinguishing a real photograph from a synthetic one is increasingly difficult. By baking authenticity data into an image at the hardware and software level during capture, Apple Reference Image would give users a way to assert that a given photo came from a real iPhone camera rather than an AI generation tool.
A privacy disclosure found within the iOS beta indicates the feature will be disabled by default when it eventually ships. Users would need to turn it on manually, reportedly through Settings > Camera > Reference Image > Reference Mode. Keeping it opt-in aligns with Apple's broader approach to privacy-sensitive features, giving users control over what additional data is attached to their photos.
Apple Reference Image fits into a wider industry effort around content provenance. Standards like the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) have been working toward exactly this kind of signed, tamper-evident metadata for digital media. Whether Apple's implementation will interoperate with those open standards - or operate as a standalone system - remains unclear, as the feature has not officially launched and Apple has not commented on it publicly. The presence of working code in a developer beta suggests it is a serious candidate for a future iOS release, though features at this stage can still be removed before a public rollout.
