BlackRAW Studio App Lets You Color Grade and Edit ProRes RAW on iPhone

BlackRAW Studio is a newly released iPhone application that enables filmmakers to work with Blackmagic RAW and ProRes RAW video files natively on their devices. The app covers the core stages of a post-production workflow - reviewing footage, applying color correction, and performing edits - all without needing to transfer files to a desktop machine first.

ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW are high-quality, minimally compressed formats favored on professional productions because they preserve more image data than standard compressed codecs, giving colorists and editors greater flexibility in post. Until recently, decoding and grading these formats demanded significant processing power, making mobile handling largely impractical. The increasing capability of Apple silicon in recent iPhone generations has made apps like BlackRAW Studio feasible.

For on-set use cases, the ability to quickly pull up RAW footage and perform a rough grade on an iPhone could be genuinely useful - whether for client reviews, continuity checks, or simply getting a more accurate read on exposure and color than a proxy would allow. The app positions itself as a tool for working filmmakers rather than a simplified consumer experience, which means the interface and feature set are oriented toward people already familiar with color grading concepts.

The broader context here is a gradual shift in what mobile hardware can realistically handle from a professional media standpoint. As camera manufacturers continue to push RAW formats as a standard offering and Apple continues to integrate more capable media engines into its chips, the gap between mobile and desktop post-production tools is narrowing. BlackRAW Studio is one of the more direct examples of that trend applied to a practical filmmaking need.
