Google’s NotebookLM can sum up your research in a TikTok-style clip

Google's NotebookLM is expanding its roster of output formats with Short Video Overviews - 60-second vertical clips that summarize the sources a user has uploaded to the app. The feature is currently rolling out to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, adding a distinctly social-media-influenced format to a tool that was originally built around note-taking and research synthesis.

The clips pair AI-generated narration with paper cutout-style artwork, a visual aesthetic that keeps production feeling approachable rather than slick. Google's own demo uses Australia's ill-fated 1932 Emu War as its subject, showing how the format can handle niche or unconventional research material just as readily as more conventional topics.

NotebookLM has been steadily building out the ways users can consume and share information drawn from their uploaded sources. The platform already supports AI-generated podcast-style audio overviews, cinematic video summaries, and structured visual explainers. The short video addition follows the same logic - rather than reading through notes or a generated text summary, users can absorb key ideas in a format that matches habits formed on short-form video platforms.

The broader significance here is less about any single format and more about the direction NotebookLM is heading. Google appears to be positioning it not just as a research assistant, but as a tool that can repackage information for different contexts and audiences - whether that means a long-form audio discussion, a quick visual brief, or a clip that could plausibly sit in a social media feed. For students, journalists, and professionals who work with dense source material, the ability to generate audience-ready outputs directly from raw research continues to widen.
