For years, illustrators and visual artists have raised serious objections to the way generative AI companies have built their models - scraping artwork from the web without consent or payment. Those objections have landed in courtrooms, with several high-profile lawsuits targeting major AI developers. Out of that friction, a handful of startups have emerged trying to take a different approach, one that involves actually paying the artists whose work underlies the technology.

Pippa is among the companies marketing itself on those grounds. Its core product is a text-to-video tool that lets users generate short video clips - a format that has become a standard offering in the gen AI space. What sets Pippa apart, at least in its own framing, is a royalty model that directs some revenue back to the artists whose styles and images informed its training data.

The practical and ethical details of such arrangements are worth scrutinizing. Paying artists after the fact does not necessarily address the original consent problem - whether those artists agreed to have their work used in training at all. Some artists draw a hard line there, arguing that compensation does not make retroactive use acceptable. Others are more open to engaging with the model if the financial terms are fair and transparent. That divide means there is unlikely to be a single answer to whether programs like Pippa's satisfy the creative community broadly.

What the emergence of these startups does signal is that the "training on public data is legally and ethically fine" position is no longer the only one companies feel comfortable staking out. Market pressure, legal uncertainty, and sustained advocacy from artists have created enough space for alternatives to take hold. Whether royalty-sharing becomes an industry norm or remains a niche selling point will likely depend on how the ongoing litigation shakes out - and on whether artists themselves decide that participation, under the right terms, is preferable to continued opposition.
