Roku Created a New Channel That's Only AI Slop 24/7

The Roku Channel recently added Fairground AI to its lineup - a 24/7 channel programmed entirely with AI-generated content. Produced by Fairground Entertainment, the channel mixes short narrative films and commercials, all made without traditional production crews. It is one of the first major attempts by a mainstream streaming platform in the West to treat AI-generated video not as a novelty clip but as a scheduled, around-the-clock broadcast product.

The case for this kind of channel leans heavily on economics. Fairground Entertainment CEO Colin Petrie-Norris has framed generative AI as the next step in the democratization of broadcast media - the same way FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV) lowered the barrier to launching a linear network by removing retransmission fees, AI lowers the barrier to filling that network with content. The cost of producing AI-generated shorts is a fraction of even low-budget live-action production, which means a channel can maintain a full programming slate without the overhead that would sink a conventional operation.

Whether there is a real audience for it in Western markets is a separate matter. The stronger precedent exists in China, where AI-generated microdramas have moved from fringe experiment to mainstream content surprisingly fast. Last quarter, more than 95% of the roughly 128,000 microdramas released in China were AI-generated, and in January alone, AI short-form dramas accounted for 38% of the top 100 hits on major platforms - pulling in around 2.55 billion views. Synthetic on-screen personalities with consistent AI-generated faces are already being cast across dozens of productions. The scale is difficult to argue with, even if the cultural conditions differ significantly from those in the US or Europe. OpenAI's own attempt at a content channel did not find traction, suggesting that platform presence alone does not guarantee viewership.

The content itself still carries the familiar artifacts of current AI video generation - occasional physics problems, hands that do not quite look right, motion that can feel slightly off. But the technology is improving at a pace that makes today's shortcomings a poor guide to what the format will look like in two or three years. Roku appears to be making a long-term bet: that by the time the technical quality is no longer a distraction, there will already be an audience conditioned to watch. Whether that audience materializes outside of China is the central question the channel will eventually answer.
