Snapchat no longer rewards fully AI-generated Spotlight content
Snapchat has quietly but deliberately shifted how its Spotlight feature handles AI-generated content, adjusting its recommendation algorithms so that videos produced entirely by AI tools are no longer eligible for the distribution boosts and creator rewards that Spotlight can provide. The change targets what the company apparently considers "AI slop" - a term that has come to describe the wave of low-quality, mass-produced generative content flooding short-form video platforms.
Spotlight, Snapchat's TikTok-style feed of user-submitted short videos, has carried a financial incentive component since its launch, with the company paying out to creators whose content performs well. That reward structure made it an attractive target for anyone looking to automate content production at scale using generative video tools - posting high volumes of AI-created clips in hopes of capturing algorithmic attention and monetary payouts.
By adjusting its recommendation systems rather than instituting a hard upload ban, Snapchat is drawing a line at promotion rather than access. Fully AI-generated videos can presumably still be posted, but they will not receive the same algorithmic lift that human-made content can earn. This is a meaningful distinction - it targets the economic incentive behind spam-like AI content without creating the thorny moderation burden of detecting and removing every AI-generated upload at the point of submission.
