Google shuts down the AI image app Pixel Studio
Google has confirmed it is shutting down Pixel Studio, the AI-powered image generation app it introduced for Pixel smartphone users. The app, which allowed users to generate images directly on their devices, lasted less than two years before Google decided to pull the plug.
Pixel Studio was positioned as a showcase feature for Pixel hardware, leaning on on-device AI processing to let users create images without sending data to the cloud. It was part of a broader push by Google to differentiate its Pixel lineup through exclusive software capabilities, alongside other AI-driven tools built into the Pixel experience.
The closure is notable given how recently the app arrived. A lifespan of under two years suggests the product either did not attract the user base Google had hoped for, or that it no longer fits the company's current priorities around AI and imaging. Google has a well-documented history of discontinuing products - from messaging apps to social platforms - when they do not meet internal benchmarks, and Pixel Studio now joins that list.
For users who relied on the app, the shutdown means finding alternative tools for AI image generation, whether through third-party apps or other built-in Pixel features that may overlap in functionality. Google has not publicly detailed what, if anything, will replace Pixel Studio's role within the Pixel software ecosystem.
