Generative image AI has quietly become a tool of choice for a certain class of social media influencer looking to project a lifestyle they don't actually live. According to a report by 404 Media, creators are using AI-generated imagery to simulate the trappings of wealth - luxury travel, high-end fashion, expensive interiors - and passing it off as their real lives to their audiences. The practice has its own informal label: "LARPing," borrowed from live-action role-playing, applied here to the performance of a fabricated identity online.
The deception is made easier by how accessible and convincing modern image generation tools have become. A realistic-looking private jet cabin, a sun-drenched villa, a bouquet of rare flowers - all of these can be produced in seconds at minimal cost. For influencers whose income depends on brand deals and audience trust, the incentive to project aspiration is high, and the barrier to faking it has never been lower.
The same dynamic is playing out in e-commerce. 404 Media's report highlights a wave of AI-generated product listings - particularly flowers and plants - appearing across Etsy, eBay, and Amazon. These listings show photorealistic images of items that do not exist in the form advertised, misleading buyers who may only realize the product is different from the image after it arrives. The pattern suggests that sellers are using image generation tools to create appealing listings quickly, with little concern for accuracy or consumer trust.
The report also touches on how companies are consuming AI tokens at a rapid pace, raising questions about cost management and the sustainability of heavy AI integration in business workflows. Taken together, these threads paint a picture of generative image AI being adopted in ways that are often deceptive by design - whether to inflate a personal brand or move product on a marketplace.
